The Rocks that Built Rochester
It’s not an accident that 90% of the country’s cobblestone structures are located within 75 miles of Rochester: from cobblestones to picturesque cemeteries, and stately red sandstone civic buildings to old mills, our area’s unique architectural heritage is, in part, a reflection of its singular geological history. Ancient shallow seas and more recent Ice Age glaciers have supplied local architects with the palette of materials and landscapes they have used to give communities form over time, making buildings and public places an ongoing dialog between the natural and human worlds. In this class, students will eavesdrop on that dialog, linking some of the most treasured landmarks with their ancient geologic processes that made them possible, and that influence their preservation today.
NOTE: This class will take online through Zoom. You will be emailed a link for the class and directions prior to the class start time.
Women in Preservation & Design
For Women's History Month, celebrate some of the femme figures who have made their mark on our cities, neighborhoods, and small towns. From nationally known figures like Louise B. Bethune, who was America's first professional female architect, to local icons like Helen Ellwanger, who founded one of the nation's earliest preservation organizations, the Landmark Society of Western New York, this class will explore the preservationists, urbanists, architects, and other designers who have shaped the built environment.
Note: This class will take place online through Zoom. Links for Zoom classes will be sent out by 5pm the day of the class.

Cadillac Hotel Heart Bombing
Join us Saturday, February 13, as we heart bomb a historic Rochester landmark, Hotel Cadillac. Follow our simple directions on how to heart bomb and bring your valentines to 45 Chestnut Street, Rochester, at 3pm. Please wear a mask.
What is heart bombing?
A phenomenon created by Buffalo’s Young Preservationists, heart bombing is a fun and festive way to draw attention to vacant buildings and to the potential that these buildings have to serve as community assets rather than eyesores. The process is simple: you gather all your favorite crafting supplies (construction paper, doilies, glitter, markers, etc.) and your favorite preservationists in a room, make valentines for needy buildings, then go out and tape those valentines to the building(s) in question or just hold them up, take lots of pictures, and post those pictures to social media.
How to Heart Bomb
Assemble crafts (pinks and glitter are encouraged; more is more)
Cut out a heart (bigger is better!)
Make a valentine
Meet us at the Hotel Cadillac (45 Chestnut St) at 3pm on Saturday
Take pictures and share the love on social media. Use #IHeartSavingPlaces

Rochester's Marvelous Monuments (and more!)
The plaque next to a highway off-ramp commemorating Lincoln’s brief stop in Rochester; the first statue to memorialize an African-American; the drinking fountain admonishing temperance and the small Statue of Liberty replica in rural village parks; the Highland Bowl (yes, it’s a memorial!)… Local monuments and memorials tell interesting stories but, ironically, they can be easy to overlook. In this month of Veterans Day, we will tell the story behind both famous and forgotten monuments and memorials dotting the Greater Rochester landscape and remember the people and events they honor.
Please note: 1.5 AIA CES Learning Units available for this class, through AIA Rochester.
